Beijing-based Go10000.com, a meta search engine, has reportedly added two sections - a travel information area and a online bulleting board system (BBS).
According to local media, the spokesperson of the company says Go10000.com has “only made several thousand yuan since it first opened”.
The report adds, “Different from Ctrip.com and eLong.com, two websites that provide comprehensive travel booking services in China, Go10000 is only a travel search engine that combines travel information of nearly 100 Chinese travel websites so that users can find necessary information within a short time. However, different from foreign competitors like Kayak and Mobissimo, Go10000 operates in a country whose travel industry’s prices are very standard for hotel and airline rates. Though meta travel search engines receive a certain amount of hype, it is difficult for them to offer users many price differentials.” It adds, “In addition, with the rise of Web 2.0 and the popularity of search engines like Google and Baidu, the underlying technology to create a meta search engine in the travel sector has become much easier to implement.”
The report further adds: “Most Chinese travelers are used to booking travel services directly with an operator or travel agent, instead of using a search engines to compare the services of each provider. As a result, Go10000 is not as popular as expected and has not made as much money as anticipated… Go10000 has therefore changed its outlook and added two new sections: a travel information area and a online bulleting board system (BBS).”
When Go10000.com had done its beta-version of the site during EyeforTravel.com's Travel Distribution Summit China in August this year, Founder and president George Cao had said, “First of all, this is a Chinese travel search engine. This is targeted at the local market. There are some English names of hotels that can be used by local users to identify hotels. For example, some know it as Holiday Inn instead of Chinese name. So its represented like that. That's as much as English we have on the site. The main function of the site is pretty much like other travel meta search engines. You log on to the site, do research, by destination, check in and check out dates, original and destination etc. And then press search, it results in search through multiple websites. And offer price and other information to the user. We actually match the product from the different suppliers so you can see the prices side by side. This is all will be coming in Chinese language.”
