It has emerged that Triposo, a start-up focused on building free, interactive travel guides for mobile devices, has raised $525,000 in seed financing from angel investors, including Chris Sacca, Taher Haveliwala, Google Wave Co-founder and Google Maps Lead Engineer Lars Rasmussen, and InterWest Partners, according to techcrunch.com.

The report shared that the company will “use this new infusion of capital to continue optimising its algorithm, working towards the goal of becoming the best possible web and mobile destination to answer: Where should I go next?”

Jon Tirsen and Douwe Osinga, two ex-Googlers, have officially unveiled their new mobile travel guide Triposo. The company collects data from all over the web and uses algorithms to produce travel guides.

The company uses the content that is freely available from seven different sources, including Wikitravel, Wikipedia, World66 and Openstreetmap.

“Our mission is to make that content relevant for you. So we mix and mash and annotate - and we distill great, relevant travel guides out of it,” says the company.

Triposo currently has over 50 different free travel guides for Android covering all major destinations. It also has a world guide: one app in which one can download all the travel guides. Plus, it has 30 travel guides for iPhone and the same number of travel guides optimised for iPad.

Triposo’s city guides have the following features:

  • In depth background information on history, getting around and getting there.

  • All major sights are covered with a good description.

  • An extensive list of restaurants to choose from, divided in different cuisines.

  • A nightlife section that has the best bars, nightclubs and more.

  • A complete overview of other activities such as hiking, biking or just relaxing on the beach.

  • An offline map that shows your location and the nearby highlights.

  • The possibility to store your personal highlights.
