Clearing four-star hotel price myth

Published: 19 Aug 2008

Discount travel site Hotwire has stated that its low prices for four-star hotels have debunked a school of thought with its rooms often being under $99 per night.

Referring to a recent Harris Interactive survey, commissioned by Hotwire, the site shared that 72 percent of US adults believe that a stay at a four-star hotel in a major US city costs $150 or more a night.

"Our data shows most consumers don't think it is possible to pay less than $150 a night for a four-star hotel. This might be an accurate price for consumers purchasing through other travel sites, but by booking four-star hotel rooms on Hotwire, you can actually save yourself a tidy sum of money. Hotwire has four-star hotel rooms in major cities, often times, for under $99 a night," said Clem Bason, vice president of merchandising and travel expert at Hotwire.com.

"Hotwire makes it possible to travel during this economic slump," added Bason.

The website, an operating company of Expedia, Inc., has special relationships with major hotel suppliers to help them fill hotel rooms that would otherwise go unsold. This results in deeply discounted room rates consumers won't see on other travel sites.

I'm one of those Americans who believes that a four-star hotel in a major city would cost more than $150 a night. I have seen two-star hotels ask for that much. But, next time I'm booking a hotel, I will give Hotwire a shot.

I will come back here and post another comment if I get a room at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco at a low price.
