Hostelworld.com introduces iPhone application for tech savvy backpackers

Published: 28 Mar 2008

Hostelworld.com has launched an iPhone specific version of its budget accommodation service.

iPhone users who visit hostelworld.com will experience a website designed for optimal use on the device, enabling them to view hostel ratings, photos and content, make and review previous bookings in an iPhone friendly layout. Users can bookmark the site onto their iPhone home screen for easy access.

Niamh Ni Mhir, Hostelworld's chief marketing officer said backpackers are an extremely tech savvy market and are well known early adoptors of new technology.

"According to a recent survey we conducted we found that 95% of backpackers bring either a laptop, digital camera, iPod or mobile phone with them when travelling. With the iPhone set to be the device of choice it was imperative for us to develop and launch an iPhone application with strong core functionality for those on the move, especially as we have noticed a significant increase in the number of visitors to the site from the iPhone since its initial launch," she said.

The launch of the iPhone application follows the introduction Hostelworld.com's mobile booking site (mobile.hostelworld.com), launched in July last year.

Hostelworld.com should be applauded for developing an application for the iPhone. It may take a while for their to be enough iPhones sold so that Hostelworld will have a sufficiently large customer base. But, working out the kinks now, Hostelworld will be leading in providing web pages to hand-held mobile devices.

It seems only logical that the best way to communicate with traveller, who is mobile, is through a mobile device. There has been talk about mobile travel applications for a decade now, but not much progress. Maybe the day is coming soon.

A drawback to the iPhone is that when Apple rolled it out it in the United States, it was required that customers also sign up for a two-year AT&T service contract. And, Apple keeps updating the software on the iPhone to thwart those who want to unblock the phone.

Perhaps Apple will see the error made in the US and not to tie foreign sales of the iPhone to a particular provider. Then, when a backpacker arrives in the next country on the journey, he or she could buy a pre-paid mobile phone account an slip in the SIM chip. This is not possible with the iPhones sold so far, mostly in the US.
