Expedia to be the exclusive travel booking provider for PlanetOut websites

Online travel company Expedia.com has partnered with PlanetOut Inc., a media company exclusively serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

PlanetOut will leverage the full offering of Expedia travel content and booking capabilities as well as integrating merchandising features directly into its network of websites. Expedia will also participate in online and offline advertising throughout the PlanetOut media network as well as sponsorship of select PlanetOut events.

Most industry analysts are more conservative, using just 5% of any given population as LGBT; this takes into consideration those who might be homosexual but, for various reasons, are living a heterosexual existance.

Even at 5%, the LGBT market is significant. There is higher discreationary income in this group, mainly because the vast majority of gay households do not have children and the related costs. Also, gays like to travel with that discretionary income, often at 2 to 3 times the national average.

I see considerable marketing to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Is it really that large of a market segment? If so, why?

Let's assume that LGBT is 10% of the population in Europe and North America. Is LGBT approximately 10% of the travel and tourism market?
