Teleticket launches new email facility for agents

Published: 07 Apr 2008

Flight consolidator Teleticket has launched a new email facility to enable them to offer a quicker and more efficient service to all of their agents.

Neil Chapman, managing director, Teleticket, said the new feature makes travel more passenger-friendly, with a reduction in unnecessary paperwork and waiting times/costs for post, increasing overall efficiencies at lower operational costs.

"This new ticketing system will also allow Teleticket to sell and ticket on a mixture of low cost and charter flights on one booking. For example an agent can offer travel with Jet2.com from Manchester to Tenerife with a return on Futura and this would be issued on one contract and ticket," he said.

This service has also eliminated the need for ticket on departure (TOD) on new bookings as the tickets can now be emailed which saves the customer time at the airport as they can proceed directly to check-in.

Teleticket has a good idea here in using email to make the process simpler for buying an airline ticket. This system can work well in Europe, the US and the few other First World countries. But, the coming growth in air travel will happen in Second and Third World countries where a majority of people do not have credit cards necessary to make an online purchase.

There is an interesting development in Mexico with the low-cost airline Volaris (clever name: "volar" means to fly and Volaris rhymes with Polaris, north star). The airline was launched less than two years ago and now serves a dozen cities within Mexico, with plans to go north of the border soon.

The problem with online travel sales in Mexico is that the country is still largely cash only. A majority of the potential travelers do not have credit cards, although that is changing fast.

So, Volaris has arranged with Oxxo, a chain of 3,400 convenience stores, to sell tickets after the reservation has been made online. Volaris tickets can also be paid for at Banamex and HSBC. Many Mexicans who do have credit cards and an internet account don't trust online commerce.

A controlling interest in Volaris is held by Carlos Slim, generally considered to be the world's second richest person, behind Warren Buffett and ahead of Bill Gates. Slim has developed a reputation for his cross-marketing gimmicks, most of which have been popular and successful.

On Volaris flights, passengers are offered the use of an iPod. Carlos Slim just happens to be one of the largest stockholders in Apple Computer.
