I wanted to follow up on your recent article regarding user-generated
content. Although user-generated travel content has created some great
business models, because sites like tripadvisor can keep their costs
really low, this is not the most beneficial medium for travelers. As
these websites become more popular, they are also becoming targets for
corrupted content. Hotel owners go straight to Tripadvisor when they
want to market themselves and tout their own places, and sometime even
bash their competition. As Christopher Elliot pointed out in his article
in the New York Times last February
(travel2.nytimes.com/2006/02/07/business/07guides.html?fta=y)
these online reviews are becoming too biased and untrustworthy.

The only model that really serves in the interest of travelers is a
hybrid model that provides editorialized content and recommendations
which are enhanced by user comments. I agree that travelers are
passionate people who love to talk about their own experiences and hear
where others have been and what they've done, but finding trustworthy
information online is incredibly cumbersome as the market has now become
flooded with unfocused, and often unsubstantiated advice.
