More than 67 million items of direct mail were sent out by the travel and tourism sector during the first quarter this year.

The figures indicate an increment over the first quarter of the previous two years. The number in the first quarter was 67.72m. In 2005 the travel and tourism sent out 64.82m items. 2005 was itself a big drop form 2004 when the total was 67.66m.

DMIS in Brief talks about how the dynamics of direct mail industry are undergoing a change driven by technology. Digital printing offers a more flexible approach to direct mail using flexible data and one on one marketing. Large direct mail users are now trimming their mail volumes, reducing costs and targeting their customers with smaller personalized mailings. The DMIS adds that as digital printing technology becomes even cheaper the erosion will increase.
